Comparing GOLDENTEAK Adirondack Chair with "teak" Adirondack Chair from Big Box store

Several of our prospects ask us what is the difference between our genuine Grade A  Premium Teak Adirondack Chairs and Teak Adirondack Chairs one may find in Big Box Stores.

To that end we did a side by side comparison.

Things we compared were

a) Grade of Teak Wood used

b) General dimensions and differences

c) Weights

d) Construction Differences

GOLDENTEAK only uses GRADE A Premium Teak Wood. This can be seen in the Honey Brown color. GOLDENTEAK Teak Outdoor Furniture is provided Natural Fine Sanded with NO FINISHES - so that the Grade A Teak Wood stands out. In this video we show that when one sands a GOLDENTEAK Teak Furniture piece - the Color of the wood DOES NOT CHANGE. It does not have a surface stain to camouflage poor wood.

Take a look at this video which shows the arm of the GOLDENTEAK Grade A Premium Teak Adirondack Chair being sanded.

The Big Box Store Teak Adirondack Chair uses wood that could be Teak, but it is of the B/C grade if it is. This is evident from a brown stain finish that is unnnaturally uniform that has been applied to the wood.

When one uses sandpaper and sands any section of the chair (video shows the arm, and photo shows the back of the chair), the true underlying whitish sap wood is exposed.  The wood feels porous and light,  and not oily and dense like the wood on the GOLDENTEAK Teak Outdoor Furniture.

Take a look at this video which shows the arm of the Big Box Store Teak Adirondack Chair being sanded.

Weights - GOLDENTEAK Teak Adirondack Chair weighs 36.5 lbs

Considering that the Big Box store Adirondack Chair weighst 25.3 lbs, there is a 30% difference in weight between the two chairs, implying that a lot more wood was used in the GOLDENTEAK Grade A Teak Adirondack Chair.

The Big Box Store Teak Adirondack Chair weighs 28 lbs as per the box, but we found that it actually weighted 25.3 lbs. This could be that the chair lost a lot of moisture after it was packaged.

GOLDENTEAK  DESIGN - GOLDENTEAK 's Teak Adirondack Chair Design uses thicker teak members and also has a special thick bar under the arm that makes the chair very rigid compared to the BIG BOX Store Chairs.  The rigidity of the design implies no movement between the members, which implies a MUCH Longer life.  The use of Grade A Teak Wood, coupled with thicker members and a more rigid design give GOLDENTEAK's Adirondack Chair significantly higher durability.

Here is a video showing GOLDENTEAK's Teak Adirondack Chair Rigidity and the picture next to it shows the bar under the arm that is a signicficant design difference.

The BIG BOX Store Adirondack Chair is made with some wood that has been stained to look more brown teak. The frame sections are thinner (by about 1/4 to 1/2 inch) than what one would get with a GOLDENTEAK Chair. The detailed thinknesses are discussed in the following section. But what is aparrent is that the design has thinner frame sections, no mortise and tenon joinery, and lacks a brace bar under the arm. This leads to the chair being rickety and flexing from front toback as shown in the video. This is when the chair is new. The amplitude of the flexing will get larger over time (it will become mroe rickety).

Frame Thickness - GOLDENTEAK  Teak Adirondack Chair

The Teak Adirondack Chair by GOLDENTEAK is made from Grade A Premium Teak Wood and delivered with a Fine Sanded Natural Finish with No Coatings (just pure natural). The Teak Frame (Legs, Sides of Seat, Brace behind the back) are all 1 Inch.

Frame Thickness - Big Box Store  Teak Adirondack Chair

The Teak Adirondack Chair from teh Big Box Store is definitely not made from Premium Grade A Teak wood. All the members used in this chair are thinner than the teak timbers used in the GOLDENTEAK Adirondack Chair by at least 25%.

Usage of Thinner Sectons throughout, gives the chair less durability and rigidity. Further - since Grade A teak Wood is very expensive per cubic meter ($5500 for raw logs) compared to Grade B/C teak ($1700 per cubic meter), the Big Box Store is giving LESS VALUE ON ALL FRONTS - using wood that is cheaper (1/3 the cost) and using lesser amounts of wood (about 25% less).
So comparitively the consumer is not getting a good deal at all. GOLDENTEAK's Adirondack Grade A Teak currently sells for $625 each. Big Box Store Grade B/C Adirondack with lesser wood sells for about $390.

If you applied the same scale to the price of the GOLDENTEAK Adirondack $625*1/3(b/c wood costs like 1/3 the price)*0.75 (25 to 30% less wood used) - the Big Box store adirondack should be priced at $390(1/3).75 = $97.5.
Now you know you are actually getting a GREAT DEAL from GOLDENTEAK.

CONCLUSION - GOLDENTEAK's Premium Grade A Teak Adirondack Chair is

  • Made with thick teak members for the frame
  • Made with Grade A Premium Teak that has no coatings and is offered in a natural fine sanded finish. You can sand it or even cut it and it is all teak throughout.
  • Rigid chair that does not flex and is durable.
  • A very comfortable design with a slightly greater recline. Embedded slats - more comfort and rigidity.
  • Heavier due to usage of more wood and usage of good wood (not parous, light B/C grade teak wood).
  • Will last for decades (see our customer photos that show our furniture lasting for more than 15 years). We have been in business since 1996 and still have our original customers.
  • 5 Year Warranty

CONCLUSION - Big Box Store Teak Adirondack Chair (CC)  is

  • Made with Grade B/C Wood that has been coated and camouflaged to make it look like Grade A Teak. A little sanding will reveal the true pale colur of the wood used and it lightness and porosity.
  • Made with thinner frame members and thinner slats
  • More rickety - flexes even after first assembly. This due to the design and the thinness of the frame members.
  • Lighter due to the usage of thinner wood and lighter and more porous grade B/C wood
  • Less recline in the design. Yes, it has a cup holder which is a good extra. Non embedded slats - less comfortable.
  • 1 year warranty
